As advised in a recent update circulated on the PTA intranet an administrative pay increase of 4% will be provided to Salaried Officers, to be backdated to 1st April 2008.  Management have decided this payment is conditional upon the 4% being absorbed into any increase as a result of the negotiation process, and negotiations having been completed and the Agreement being in the registration process by 30th June 2008, with payments to stop at this date if this is not the case.

This payment is separate to the negotiation process and should be regarded as such by all members.  It is not reasonable to impose artificial deadlines on something as important as your Union Collective Agreement.  The ASU has not been requested to agree to this administrative payment, and has in no way endorsed the employers' conditions of this payment.

The ASU supports all increases in employees' salaries but does not think 4% is enough.  Members should remind themselves of the increased cost of living and demand that the 4% increase is not the only pay rise they receive this year.

4% is less than inflation, it's less than the CPI for Perth, and it is certainly less than the rise in the cost of living.  In fact if you look at the cost of rents and petrol which have risen by as much as 50% in the last 2 years, then 4% is simply not enough.  A 4% increase is also a far cry from our claim of 8% per year for the next 3 years.  Not only that but it makes no reference to pay increases in subsequent years.  No more than 4% has been made available by government and this makes absolutely no mention of other claims such as increases to Superannuation, uniforms and other allowances.

The ASU supports a timely negotiation process, but has to ensure that the gains that members want and deserve are not forgone for the sake of speed.
