Canon did not listen. Canon did not treat the employees they were making redundant with respect. Canon did not correctly pay the employees they made forcibly redundant.

What could you expect?

You could expect that Canon would take the advice given to them about how they approach employees to terminate their employment.

Did Canon listen? No. They sent each of the employees who were made forcibly redundant on 6 December 2007 a text message or an email 'inviting' them to a meeting. No dignity, no respect.

Redundancy calculations

Canon has had ample time to ensure that each employee who was terminated would receive accurate calculations of the payments they were to receive. Did they? No!

Employees made forcibly redundant (they left the employ of the company immediately at the end of the meeting they were 'invited' to) were not paid correctly. Their calculations had a range of errors including incorrect tax applications, incorrect total number of weeks, incorrect calculation of the 25% loading for employees over the age of 45 etc.

Could this have been avoided?

Yes, it could have. If Canon spent the same amount of time on this redundancy process as they do messing with the Balanced Score Card, employees would have been well looked after.

As it stands Canon management seem very focused on how they will look forward to reducing technicians' numbers further through either natural attrition or through performance management.

What about the Balanced Score Card?

As previously reported, the National Consultative Committee has NOT signed off on any form of new system.

The NCC has endlessly put to management the flaws and difficulties of the current system and the proposed changes. It appears that new management may well institute a new system.

The ASU has written seeking further clarification on the status of the Balanced Score Card or any new system which Canon believes they may bring in.

What happens next?

The ASU will continue to pursue the correct payments and documentation for ASU members made forcibly redundant.

For the latest details on the Balanced Score Card speak with your State NCC Rep or ASU official.
