Canon has advised the National Consultative Committee (NCC) of the final steps in their making redundant a number of technicians' positions.
The Canon decisions
- There will not be a call for voluntary redundancy.
- Employees who are to be made forcibly redundant will not be an employee who is on a current PIP or who achieved an 'exceed' or 'star' on their last assessment.
- These decisions have been made to meet their 'building a platform for the future' program.
- Employees who are being made forcibly redundant will be notified of a meeting with management on Thursday this week.
- If there are two people who score the same in the selection criteria for forced redundancy then it will be a last on first off basis.
What should you do?
If you receive a message to meet with management on Thursday, remember, if you are an ASU member, you have every right to take an ASU representative with you.
Why is this so important? You need to make sure you have a witness to any discussions you have with management and you need to contact your ASU Branch office as soon as possible after your meeting.
Your ASU Delegates
Your ASU Delegates have worked hard to represent your views in both the ASU meeting with Canon and the NCC meetings regarding this appalling redundancy process. The representations they have made to date have had an influence on the steps the company has taken.
Many of you are naturally very concerned about your future. Your ASU Delegate can only provide you with as much information as is contained in this bulletin today.
As soon as they have any other information it will be provided to you via an ASU bulletin. If you need to take a Delegate with you to meet with management you should contact them ASAP.
What about the next phase?
Canon says they will be re-assessing the criteria used for the remaining forced redundancies by March 2008. Of course it is straight forward to see that the company will expect to reduce the numbers of redundancies required through performance management.
What can you do?
You should make sure you all support one another through this very difficult time. There is no simple or painless solution to these circumstances.
